Professor Tiago Miguel Ferreira, professor and researcher at Civil Engineering, Architecture and Environment Department of Instituto Superior Técnico, and a member of the Earthquake Engineering Field Investigation Team (EEFIT), contributed to the reconnaissance report on the magnitude 6.0 earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan on 31 August 2025.
The report, published on 5 March, results from a collaboration between the Earthquake Engineering Field Investigation Team (EEFIT), the Association Française du Génie Parasismique (AFPS), the NED University of Engineering and Technology, and RedR.
The document brings together field observations and technical analyses covering several aspects of the event, including earthquake characterisation, emergency response and relief operations, geotechnical failures, the performance of the built environment and infrastructure, as well as key lessons identified from the disaster.
The full report is available on the UK Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) website:

It should be noted that Portugal currently does not have a formal organisation dedicated to post-earthquake reconnaissance missions, which makes the participation of Portuguese researchers in international initiatives of this nature particularly relevant.
