On 10 February, from 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm, Professor Tiago Ferreira’s Inaugural Lecture will take place in Room 4.41 at DECivil, on the topic “Structural Vulnerability and Damage Scenarios for Risk-Informed Decision Making.”
The seminar will address simplified and scalable methods to assess vulnerabilities and risks associated with natural hazards, with a particular emphasis on earthquakes. Physical vulnerability indicators will be explored and integrated into hazard, exposure, and damage scenarios, enabling the estimation of risk and losses at both building and urban scales.
Special attention will be given to the role of vulnerability and damage scenarios in pre- and post-disaster decision-making, including the identification of critical buildings, retrofitting priorities, and risk mitigation strategies, such as digitally enhanced and fragility-based evacuation planning. The seminar will also address sources of uncertainty in large-scale assessments and ways to reduce them through model calibration and validation, using experimental and analytical approaches.
